Professional audio mastering is the "art and science" of carefully processing a recording for optimum sound and media standards. It is is the final stage in the music production process, right before duplication or publishing. The output of this process is called a premaster. That can be a PCM file for online distribution, a physical CD premaster or an DDP image file. The premaster contains the arranged, processed recordings with additional coding like PQ, ISRC, UPC and CD-Text in order to be the definitive blueprint for duplication.
